Achieving Superb Fit and Finish on the Updated Audi TT

A behind the scenes insight into Audi’s inline final assembly flush and gap measurement technology supporting the iconic TT model.

Gap Measurement Audi TT

AUDI HUNGARIA Zrt. develops and produces engines for AUDI AG and other companies of the Volkswagen Group in Győr, Hungary. In 2013, the company inaugurated a new automobile plant there covering the complete production process. This marked the start of series production of the new Audi A3 Sedan and the Audi A3 Cabriolet. These were followed in 2014 by the new Audi TT Coupé and the Audi TT Roadster, which are built entirely at the Audi plant in Hungary.

The Audi TT has been renowned for its sporty and progressive design for over 20 years. Now the brand with the four rings has presented the third generation of Coupé and Roadster. These models are the purest combination of dynamics, emotion and technology – in design, the engines, chassis and the innovative operating concept. The open-topped TT and TTS Roadster fascinates with its sports car character, distinctive design, excellent dynamics and groundbreaking technology.

Audi uses various NEXTSENSE CALIPRI systems to help monitor the process of car assembling from body-in-white to end-of-line final assembly. Fully automatic CALIPRI C12 COBOT systems and CALIPRI C11 manual inline systems in final assembly, alongside CALIPRI C11 systems at rework stations and portable CALIPRI C10 hand-held systems provide quality assurance and analysis throughout the process. Some of these systems are shown in the above video from Audi’s new Audi TT final assembly line.

The CALIPRI C12 COBOT enables the cooperation of human and robot side by side in a continuous production line – without separation, mechanical barriers or other restrictive and protective devices. At the same station, shop floor associates can use the CALIPRI C11 systems to evaluate other important profiles, such as flush and gap areas between bonnet and rear trunk.

The major advantage of the NEXTSENSE CALIPRI systems - besides the elimination of user influences - is the use of uniform evaluation methods. This enables measurement data from different systems and process steps to be compared for process improvement. Both the robotic measurements and manual measurements can be integrated into one inspection protocol. With this, the NEXTSENSE CALIPRI systems support a superb fit and finish, realising the car’s iconic design.

Right on time for the 20th anniversary of the first Audi TT, the brand is highlighting the sports car character of the new model. Audi has accordingly refined the design of the TT 3rd generation model, enhanced its performance and extended the range of standard equipment. Besides the driver-oriented Audi virtual cockpit, the basic version of the new model now features the ‘Audi drive select’ dynamic handling system, a rain and light sensor, heated exterior mirrors and the multifunction steering wheel, which allows the driver to control the infotainment and voice control systems. Also standard are the illuminated USB ports, as well as Bluetooth for wireless pairing of devices.
